The first GRS/GRC Multiscale Mechanobiology & Mechanochemistry conference has just concluded, and my mind is buzzing with excitement. I had the opportunity to attend many excellent talks and learn about intriguing new findings from my young peers. This highly multidisciplinary field is at the forefront of addressing challenges in materials science and biomedical engineering.
Despite some difficulties managing the global chaos caused by a Windows crash, we successfully navigated the situation. One of the most important aspects, in my opinion, was the mentorship panel, which focused on career opportunities both inside and outside of academia.
We were fortunate to have four outstanding mentors:
Stacey Chin, Christoph Weder, Matthew Dilsaver, and Yingyu Liu
Each one of them shared his/her perspective about career, giving insightful tips to us, young researchers.
If I had to summarize this session, I will quote four sentences related to career:
“Is never a career choice” (Matthew Dilsaver)
“We are trained as scientist and not as therapist” (Yingyu Liu)
“A job is a job” (Stacey Chin)
“Don’t delay to find out what you want” (Christoph Weder)
I have to say, most of the fun came from organizing this event with the support of a great team!
Tian (May) Zeng, Stephen Schettrl, Anna Tarakanova, and of course Kerstin Blank.
Without Kerstin we would have been doomed! She was great and always on top of everything
I am looking forward to participating in the next event, which will be chaired by the talented Russell Wilson and Sophia Bailey!
Will you come as well?
